Dancers, spoken word artists, musicians, jugglers, comedians – all are welcome to perform or join the audience at the Capri’s Freedom of Xpression open mic on the first Monday of every month. Performers’ registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 6 p.m. All shows are free and open to the public.
Freedom of Xpression is about giving artists – emerging, established and everything in between – the opportunity to bring their art to an audience. Hosts Desdamona and Joe Adams create a family-friendly, welcoming space for all. Their goals include increasing participation by young people so students may, for example, take a turn at co-hosting the show. They also want to encourage established community artists to perform so young people can see and learn from professionals.
With that in mind, special guest artists perform alongside and in support of all Freedom of Xpression artists each month. Voice of Culture Drum and Dance will appear on February 1 in celebration of Black History Month. “This group brings a really high energy presentation to the stage, incorporating West African drumming, dance and spoken word,” said Desdamona. “Every time I’ve seen them perform they’ve just changed the room completely. It’s amazing!”
